Marina of La Coruna. The engineers and technicians of Juergen Wentworth-Paul remarks:

the works at The RelationShip.
+++ Successful Crossing of the Bay of Biscay, August 7,1998 ++++ news
Date of notice: Friday, 07-Aug-1998 5pm (schmid, kubisch/ illik)
Place: La Coruna, Spain
Today: We arrived at La Coruna! On Friday, 07-Aug-1998 Reiner Schmid and Florian
Sellmeier successfully finished the crossing of the Bay of Biscay and
arrived at the Spanish province of Galicia. But it has to be admitted that
the delight was of limitd nature: The RelationShip arrived in the harbour
of La Coruna hooked onto a marine boat.
In a distance of about 35sm off
the coast a mecanical problem at the oar happened. The reason for this
problem has to be investigated. During this happening at sea the crew
decided to call a towboat by radio. Contrary to the original planning now
the works at The RelationShip will be done at La Coruna and not at Bayona
south of Vigo.
The Ship's crew:
Prof. Dr. Reiner Schmid, Ocean Yachtsman, General Manager and Chief
Developer of The RelationShip; Florian Sellmeier, Diplom Physicist and
Yachtsman from Munich. He got his sailing experience on the Bavarian
Lakes, Adriatic Sea and the Atlantique Ocean. Florian Sellmeier also is
responsible for the integration of the Sponsor CAN's radar system into the
project.
Land crew:
Presently a group of engineers and technicians prepare their travel to La
Coruna together with a workshop truck.

Place: L' Aber Vrac'h, France
Today: Reiner Schmid and Florian Sellmeier arrived at L'Aber Vrac'h on
02-Aug-1998 by 3am. Weather forecastst prohibit an immediate travel on:
southwesterlies are reported with Beaufort 6. So the day is spent at the
yachting harbour. Some works at the electronics are carried on (e. g.
replacement of the selection switch for automatic/manual control) as well
as with the Rigg: the hatch has been covered by a dome of glass.

+++ L' Aber Vrac'h: Draxlers's Solo, August 1, 1998 ++++ news
Date of notice: Saturday, 01-Aug-1998 10pm (schmid, draxler/ illik)
Place: Trebeurden, France
Today: Reiner Schmid, Florian Sellmeier and Willi Draxler arrived at Lezardrieux
on Friday, 31-Jul-1998 at 8pm. On Saturday (01-Aug-1998) at 11.30am
RelatinShip left harbour with beginning low tide. Onboard the Ship are
Schmid and Sellmeier, heading for Brest, France. Wlli Draxler is planned
to meet the boat next to Trebeurden.
But, an optimum wind persuaded the
trimaran's crew not to stop at Trebeurden but to sail on directly to the
last harbour before crossing the Bay of Biscay. Unfortunately Draxler has
not been available at the radio telephone; so he did not recognize the
change of plans and in the evening he spent his time waiting for The
RelationShip. It was at 9.30pm when he got the news "directly" from
Furtwangen: the new place to meet RelationShip and her crew should be
L'Aber Vrac'h. Due to the limited time Schmid decided not to stop at Brest
but go streight to L' Aber Vrac'h from where the crossing of the Bay of
Biscay will be started.
The known experiences of the test cruise will give input for modifications
at the boat and at the technical equipment. The works will be carried on
after crossing the Bay of Biscay. A crew of 5 people made up of engineers
and technicians will travel to the Iberic Peninsula soon. Due to high
overall costs and missing shipyard at EXPO98 at Lisbon the planned works
are advanced. With support of the German Embassy in Madrid and especially
the German Honorary Consul at Vigo the organisation of the stop at the
Spanish Shipyard at Bayona was prepared. Bayona is situated next to the
Portuguese border. Presently a stop of approximately three weeks is
planned.

Place: Cherbourg France
Today: After 18 hours at sea the crew arrived tired but safely at Cherbourg at
7pm. At times the outboard motor had to be used due to difficult weather
conditions. After a marvellous meal, cooked by the land crew for the ship
crew, Ulrich Barkow and Michael Ryczek had talks with people from a French
TV station. The TV team will come back tomorrow (at 8.30am) for taking
pictues onboard the RelationShip. Whether there will be a quick start to
Brest depends on the time for taking pictures and on the weather
conditions.
At Furtwangen University of Applied Sciences: Whoopee Pictures from Munich
shot movies all over the day at the campus. Of high interest the control
room at the University as well as the server farm located at the Horray

Today: Now it's a whole week since The RelationShip arrived at
Boulogne-sur-Mer. As then south-westerlies are predominant and prevent to
sail on to Cherbourg. The sky is cloudy, only some few times the sun is
visible. It is too cold for a bath in the sea, and the nearby sandy beach
is dirty. To the south of the yachting harbour there is an industrial
zone. Nevertheless the ship's crew and the land-crew are in good moods.
The local news magazine La Voix du Nord published an illustrated article
about The RelationShip on sunday 12-Jul-1998. During the next days the
landcrew repeatedly had to stop souvenir-chasers from dismantling items
from the ship.

Place: Strait of Dover, France/England
Day before yesterday: Matze Beilken has been met at Amsterdam.
Yesterday: Start off Ijmuiden at 6am. The RelationShip heads off for
Calais.
Today: The Strait of Dover is entered by 7am. Weather conditions are
partly cloudy, mild temperatures and windy. The direction of the wind is
not favourable: we have to tack against the wind. The RelationShip is
encircled by five ferry ships, one of them a Hoovercraft. Aboard we can
observe the area of Dover as well as Calais.
Arrival at the Harbour of Boulogne-sur-Mer at 10am. A longer stay is
planned. The crew has to take a break and the weather forecast will be
observed. As soon as optimum conditions exist, The RelationShip will leave
the harbour again. Next target will be Cherbourg.
Juergen Kubisch fights against the interface between his laptop and the
control computer (...there seems to be a loose contact..., the filenames
to enter are unhandily long...).
